Doris Jean Vinson Embrey died peacefully on Monday, November 18, 2024 in Brandenburg, Kentucky, happily joining her husband, Carl B. Embrey Jr. who left us in 2006.
Along with her husband, Doris Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Elsie Ford Vinson, five sisters: Rita (Ray) Thomas, Morine (Albert) Shephard, Loretta (Carl) Wells, Ester Lavina Vinson, and Bera (Kenneth) Bennett, one grandson, Derek O’Neil Dowell, and one grandson-in-law, Ian William Thomas.
Doris Jean is survived by one brother, Norman (Lynn) Vinson of Warrenton, Virginia, sister-in-law, Judy (Bobby) Hubbard of Battletown, and brother-in-law Freddie (Dottie) Embrey of Louisville. She will be missed by four children, Jeff (Kay) Embrey, Janet (Dan) Powers, Kevin Dale Embrey, and Karen (Joey) Singleton, all of Brandenburg. She was the proud Mamaw of eight grandchildren, Jeffrey Lee Embrey, Beau Daniel Powers, Blake Benjamin Powers, Ashley Embrey Thomas, Seth Embrey Powers, Bryan Lewis Dowell, Bliss Powers Aebersold and Logan Patrick Embrey. She as wonderfully blessed with eighteen great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews and their families.
A proud Meade County native, Doris Jean was very active in the community, primarily through her church, First Baptist Church of Brandenburg. A church member for her entire life, she was involved as a Sunday school teacher, nursery worker/coordinator, WMU officer, and choir member, to name a few. She served as an ambassador for the Salem Association in multiple capacities through the years and was also a regular volunteer at the Meade County Clothes Closet. If there was a need, Doris Jean readily became involved. She was loved and admired by her wonderful church family and thrived on their love and support through the years.
Doris Jean was fondly known as “The Paper Lady” in Brandenburg for over two decades, delivering the Courier-Journal/Louisville Times daily – no matter the conditions or weather. She thrived on the daily interaction with people around town, never meeting a stranger. Everyone in town knew to get out of Doris Jean’s way when she was on her route. She had a schedule to keep!
As a mother and grandmother, Doris Jean was always the life of the party. Scavenger hunts in the woods, strawberry-picking battles, games of Annie Over or Kick the Can, battling the ocean waves on a boogie board (well into her sixties), were common-place with Mamaw. She was loved and adored, living every minute to the fullest.
Doris will be missed by all who knew and admired her – her family, her neighbors, her church family, and the caring staff at All About Home in Brandenburg. God definitely welcomed an angel into his kingdom where Carl Jr. was waiting with open arms.
