Blake Powers, who helped Army West Point to the most wins in school history this past season, has been named the 6th head coach in Meade County football history, Principal Garrett Frank announced Monday.
“We are excited to have Coach Blake Powers leading our football program, and we welcome Blake, his wife, Carrie, and their entire family, to the Greenwave Nation,” Frank said. “We are confident in his ability to continue and build upon the success of Greenwave Football. His passion for building relationships and leading young men is evident throughout his career.”
Powers, the former Greenwave quarterback, coached Running Backs, Tight Ends, and Fullbacks over the previous three seasons at Army West Point helping lead the most prolific rushing offense in the country.
“My family and I are excited and extremely blessed for the opportunity to serve the Meade County community and Greenwave Nation”, said Powers. “Coaching at the high school level and being able to impact kids off the field is something that's always been on my heart. Meade County football has a rich history of great coaches who led and served the community with unprecedented character. It's hard to put into words the impact Meade County football, coach Mofield, and all our coaches had on my life. To be able to give back and serve the community that raised me is a dream come true. My family and I can't wait to come back home and get to work."
During Powers’ tenure at Army, the Black Knights led the country in rushing in the 2024 season by over 50 yards per game, averaging over 300 rushing yards per game. The rushing attack helped propel the team to an AAC Conference Championship, a 12-2 overall record, and a victory in the Independence Bowl. Coach Powers’ running back room produced an all-conference performer and combined for 1,488 yards and 5.68 yards per carry, which ranked 5th in the country. They supported a rushing attack whose quarterback finished 6th in the Heisman voting and broke the all-time NCAA FBS single-season rushing touchdowns record, and all five offensive linemen received All-Conference honors, with two receiving All-American honors.
“From the beginning of our search, Coach Powers stood out for his success at the highest levels of college football, leadership qualities, and understanding of Meade County football”, stated Athletic Director Todd Clanton. “His dedication to the young men in our football program will be unquestioned and I am excited to watch our players develop under his leadership on and off the field.”
Prior to coaching at the collegiate level, Powers served in the Army on active duty for 12 years, where he reached the rank of Major. He deployed to Afghanistan twice during his career on two separate combat deployments, where he earned the Bronze Star Medal. During his decorated military career, his other awards and qualifications include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Ranger Tab, Pathfinder, Airborne, and Air Assault Badges. Coach Powers was also awarded the Officer Leadership Award as the honor graduate of his Ranger School class.
Powers was the starting quarterback and four-year letter-winner during his collegiate playing career at Indiana University. At the conclusion of his playing career, he was the single-season touchdown pass record holder.
Powers and his wife Carrie have three daughters Ella Kate, Lucy, and Camille, and two sons Eli and Lucas.
Coach Powers will lead a football program steeped in tradition. Meade County Football has won 17 District Championships, 8 Region Championships, and made the State Finals in 1991 and 2013.
