Harry Saxton Craycroft passed away on February 20, 2024.
He was born on June 5, 1946 in Brandenburg, KY, son of the late James Saxton Craycroft and Emma Eleanor Ashcraft Craycroft. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death, just 7 months prior, by his loving and faithful wife of 52 years, Marilyn Sue Walker Craycroft.
Harry was the loving father to his two children, Mary Eleanor ‘Ellie’ (Scott) Meisenbach of Cincinnati, OH and David Saxton (Lorie) Craycroft of Brandenburg, KY. He was ‘Pa’ to his eight grandchildren; Logan, Maddelyn (Colin), Makenna, Meah, Lincoln, Mason, Bethany and Tyler. Harry leaves behind his older sister, Elaine (Jack) Schekira of Jacksonville, FL; his brother-in-law, Billy Walker; and sister-in-law, Marsha Walker.
Harry was raised in Meade County, Kentucky, where he graduated in 1964. He then graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1968 and went on to complete his Masters in 1971 and his Rank 1 in 1974.
Harry taught Government, Geography, and History for 27 years and was the department chair at Meade County High School.
He was a baseball player in high school which then led him to play in the American Legion for 5 years wearing jersey #20.
He was the assistant MCHS baseball coach and the assistant soccer coach.
Harry established the MCHS soccer program in 1989, was the MCHS basketball clock operator for 24 years, was the “Voice of the Greenwave” for various sports for WMMG, was a National Youth Soccer Coach, and was an instructor at Centre College High School Soccer Camps. Harry and Marilyn were UofL basketball supporters and season ticket holders, as well as lifelong WKU supporters and alumni members.
Harry was a humble man who worked hard to provide for his family. He would teach school all day, then farm, and at night worked at RECC.
He was involved in the community and held many offices in the county.
After retiring from MCHS, Harry worked in the PVA office, was elected Meade County Judge Executive, and also worked at the Meade County Sheriff Office. He also served on the Brandenburg Planning and Zoning Committee. Harry was the president of the Meade County Lion’s Club, the Meade County Alumni Association, the Meade County Educational Association, and the Meade County Youth Soccer Association.
Harry and Marilyn loved to travel, but what he loved even more was telling everyone about their trips. In their travels, they visited 14 different countries and 38 states, including Alaska and Hawaii.
For all that knew Harry, he was a kind, warm soul who was passionate about Meade County and this community. He loved to serve in different capacities; husband, father, grandfather, teacher, farmer, coach, community leader, and strong believer in Christ. Harry was the most optimistic man who wore a smile and had a laugh to carry him through all the adversities with his health and physical impairments. He always had a quick colloquialism or story to anyone who would lend an ear!
