Mary Hattie McCollum Claycomb, age 91, of Irvington, KY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at her home in Irvington, KY.
She was born on May 25, 1932 in Garnettsville, KY, daughter of the late Marchie James McCollum and Flora Ethel Poole McCollum. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 wonderful years, Francis Leo Claycomb, Sr.; sister, Marie McCollum; and brothers, Mack, Albert, Carman, and Darryl McCollum.
Mary worked as a bookkeeper for IGA for 32 years and retired as a bookkeeper for Planters Insurance after 10 years. She loved baking, crocheting, gardening, canning, and anything outdoors. She also enjoyed reading, cheering for UK basketball, watching The Young and the Restless, and was the reigning Scrabble Queen. She was the greatest secret keeper and gave everyone unconditional love. While Mary held many titles, the one most important to her was “Christian.” She was very involved in the Irvington Baptist Church and poured her heart into her work there. She served as the WMU President, led the preschool class, and blessed the congregation with her beautiful singing voice in the church choir for 57 years. A woman of amazing faith and the heart of the Claycomb family, Mary shaped their spirituality by her tireless Christian example, showing everyone around her what it meant to be truly loved and cared for. She was a devoted wife for 70 years, and a loving mother, Mamaw, and friend to everyone she met.
She is survived by her three children, Carol Claycomb Ham of Webster, KY, Martha “Lynn” (Stanley) Simmons of Webster, KY, and Frank (Sherry) Claycomb, Jr. of Brandenburg, KY; grandchildren, Staci (Keith) Bennett, Jeremy (Courtney) Compton, Amanda (Casey) Sullivan, Lauren (Gavin) Wood, Haleigh (Mason Lee) Claycomb, Courtney (Lizz Forseman) Ham, Russ (Nicole) Ham, Kaira Simmons, and Donovan (Destiny) Simmons; great-grandchildren, Lyndsey, Madison, Landen, Logan, Mallory, Presley, Parker, Maybree, Eli, Nate, Hudson, Jack, Gavin, Don Jr, Zachary, Mariann, Brandon, Patrick, and Aubrey; and a host of church family and friends.
