Sammie Lou Quiggins

WMMG

Sammie Lou VanLahr Bramlett Quiggins of Webster fulfilled a long and wonderful life in passing away Wednesday, December 18th, 2024, at the Breckinridge Memorial Extended Care Facility, surrounded by family and loved ones recalling the many great times shared during her amazing life.

She was born May 19th, 1937, in Irvington, Kentucky to C.A. and Lucille Dugan VanLahr. She was a 1956 graduate of Irvington High School, finishing as Valedictorian of her class. She later began work at First State Bank, where she was employed for 62 years. She was instrumental in the openings of Bank of Clarkson, Meade County, West Point, and River City Banks. She was married to Raleigh Lee Bramlett in 1956 until his death in1989. She married James Donald Quiggins of Louisville in 1993 and remained until his passing in 1999. During her time with Don, she joined the Catholic faith and became a member at Holy Guardian Angels Parish in Irvington.

With a love of food and fellowship and cooking for those with an appetite, “Miss Sammie” was known for her many great meals, both small and simple to large and special, even using her talents to benefit her home Parish. Her reputation convinced the Breckinridge County Herald News to allow her a column called “Never Trust a Skinny Cook,” which ran for several years before converting into a weekly radio program on WXBC Radio. A collection of recipes and family photos and stories were pulled together in a cookbook made for primarily for family and friends before recently being re-introduced as “Sammie Q’s Cookbook” which published prior to her passing.

Sammie never knew a stranger and her friendship and presence touched the lives of the many people who came into her life by way of school, work, church, community, and special care which she received in her final years.

She is survived by her son, Raleigh Lee (Shanna) Bramlett of Hardinsburg; two step-grandchildren: Colin Patrick Sharp of Crestwood and Aileen Theresa Sharp of Hardinsburg; three siblings: Nora Dailey of Florence, Alabama; Charles A. (Twylane) VanLahr II of Elizabethtown and Jonathan Dugan (Marinetta) VanLahr of Webster. Eight nieces and nephews: Charles Edward Robbins, Jr. and Amy Robbins (Brian) Thompson, both of Florence, Alabama; Charles A. (Lisa) VanLahr III of Centreville, Virginia; Amanda Carol (Todd) Shilts of Webster; Jonathan Gabriel (Lindsey) VanLahr of Webster and Andrew Dugan (Hailey) VanLahr of Chicago, Illinois; great nieces and nephews: Miles Thompson, Charles Edward Robbins III, Andrew and Ellie VanLahr and Emma VanLahr Mullins; Matthew, Jacob, Maddie and Caroline Shilts; Lola, Rhodes and Lincoln VanLahr and Audrey Mullins; great-great nieces and nephews: Lola,  Rhodes and Lincoln VanLahr, and great great niece Aubrey Mullins.
